Optimality Theory and Human Sentence Processing

چکیده
This paper applies the idea of a winner-take-all constraint satisfaction system like that found in Optimality Theory to human sentence parsing. Three sets of constraints, each of which is derived from a parsing theory from the current literature, are attempted. The empirical data considered here do not seem to be consistent with any of these theories. It is argued that a cumulative constraint weighting system accounts for the data considered here better than a winnertake-all approach as is assumed in Optimality Theory.

Optimality in Sentence Processing
In this chapter we explore the possibility that within Optimality Theory, a single syntactic grammar directly yields not only competence theoretic results on the grammatical distributions of elements, but also performance theoretic results on relative preferences when processing sentences with various syntactic ambiguities. Whereas the competence theory applies the grammar at the level of an en...
متن کاملOptimality Theory and Human Sentence Processing: Towards a Cross-Modular Analysis of Coordination
In this paper we propose a model of human sentence processing that is based on Optimality Theory (OT). In contrast to most other OT approaches to language processing, we use constraints from OT semantics rather than OT syntax to explain on-line comprehension. We illustrate the workings of our model by investigating the processing of coordinated structures. The psycholinguistic evidence that is ...
متن کاملSentence Processing Among Native vs. Nonnative Speakers: Implications for Critical Period Hypothesis
The present study intended to investigate the processing behavior of 2 groups of L2 learners of English (high and mid in proficiency) and a group of English native speakers on English active and passive reduced relative clauses. Three sets of tasks, an offline task, and 2 online tasks were conducted. Results revealed that the high-proficiency group’s performance was the same as that of the nati...
متن کاملTask-Induced Involvement in L2 Vocabulary Learning: A Case for Listening Comprehension
The study aimed at investigating whether the retention of vocabulary acquired incidentally is dependent upon the amount of task-induced involvement. Immediate and delayed retention of twenty unfamiliar words was examined in three learning tasks( listening comprehension + group discussion, listening comprehension + dictionary checking + summary writing in L1, and listening comprehension + dictio...
